Unsafe Structures Demolition Program
The Unsafe Structures Demolition Program provided Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Disaster Recovery funds to help municipalities raze homes rendered uninhabitable due to Superstorm Sandy damage. The State targeted municipalities that experienced the most intense and concentrated housing damage. Buildings eligible for the program were those that were structurally unsound and qualified as an “unsafe structure” pursuant to the Uniform Construction Code (N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.32); buildings that were simply left in place since Superstorm Sandy and weren’t mitigated in any way; and buildings that were partially mitigated but showed no sign of on-going repair. The funded demolitions were targeted to areas where the breadth and concentration of damage created clusters of “unsafe structures” that threatened entire neighborhoods with blight and disinvestment of surrounding properties.
