Unsafe Structures Demolition Program
The Unsafe Structures Demolition Program will provide up to $25 million in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Disaster Recovery funds to help municipalities raze homes rendered uninhabitable due to Superstorm Sandy damage. The State is targeting municipalities that experienced the most intense and concentrated housing damage. Buildings eligible for the program are those that are structurally unsound and qualify as an “unsafe structure” pursuant to the Uniform Construction Code (N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.32); buildings that have been simply left in place since Superstorm Sandy and are unmitigated in any way; and buildings that are partially mitigated but show no sign of on-going repair. The funded demolitions will be targeted to areas where the breadth and concentration of damage have created clusters of “unsafe structures” that threaten entire neighborhood with blight and disinvestment of surrounding properties.
